Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
