19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hard courts

A resurgent Medvedev secured his initial title for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has had a difficult season, managing just one match at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.

The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in particular - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's initial trophy since the Italian tournament and initial on a hardcourt since March of the previous year.

Victory also indicates the Russian has achieved twenty-one championships at 21 various tournaments.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my children at once, so to win a championship is particularly special," commented tennis professional Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had lost his previous six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament earlier this year.

His retrieving approach and recurring emotional displays on court had caused observers to question if his ability to play at the top level was finished.

Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

Medvedev recovered from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Moutet, winning 4 of the final five games to go ahead.

Both players exchanged breaks in the middle set before Moutet, striving for his first tour title, gained dominance to force a third set.

The opponent defended four early-game chances in a close third set before the Russian won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a point at the net, with his opponent incapable to handle a return after a lengthy match.
